FAQ
How far ahead of my event should I submit an order inquiry?
Ideally, 6-8 weeks in advance, but definitely at least 3 weeks. A lot of planning and prep goes into making a custom decorated sugar cookies, so the more time I have the better. I also tend to book out a several weeks in advance, so the sooner you contact me the more likely we will be able to make it work. In the event that I am able to take a last minute order (less than 3 weeks between receiving your order inquiry and your requested pickup date), there will be a 20% rush fee applied to your order.
How will my cookies be packaged?
Your cookies will be individually heat-sealed in clear cellophane bags and then packed in bakery boxes. At your request, I can leave a “tail” on the bags so you can add a ribbon or bow, or I can attach a small ribbon or bow for an additional fee.
How long will my cookies stay fresh?
Your cookies will be individually heat-sealed for freshness and then packed in bakery boxes. The cookies will stay fresh in their sealed bags for up to 2 weeks and can be frozen for up to 3 months. You'll receive storage and freezing instructions in your box.
What is the pick up process?
You will be given a 30-minute window for pickup, based on your requested time, from our home bakery in the Sellwood neighborhood of SE Portland. The cookies will be waiting in the secure "cookie cabinet" on the covered porch. You will be provided with more detailed instructions once your order is confirmed.
Do you provide delivery?
Unfortunately, we are not able to provide delivery. We're happy to work with you to make pickup as convenient as possible and have had several clients arrange pickups with Uber and other couriers.
What does "home bakery" mean?
In many states, including Oregon, there are special provisions that allow certain food items to be produced in a home kitchen. Anyone involved in food preparation must be a licensed food handler and follow strict health and safety regulations. A home baker may not sell any item that requires temperature control (i.e. refrigeration within 48 hours) to prevent spoilage and must be the final point-of-sale of any item they produce. Allowing bakers to produce their products in their home kitchens means bakers like myself are able to run successful businesses without the overhead and logistics of a commercial kitchen. It also means there are a lot of dishes in my sink...
What happened to the cakes and cupcakes?
Over time, as Black Cat Baking started getting busy, I reached a point where I had to make some choices about the direction my bakery would take. So, I decided to take a step away from cakes and cupcakes and focus on custom decorated sugar cookies. I can still occasionally fit in a simple cake or cupcake order, so feel free to contact me if you'd like to make a cake or cupcake request!
